Germany Announces Major New Aid for Ukraine During Merz Visit to Kyiv
KYIV, Ukraine — October 4, 2026 | Imperial News Network
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a major new package of assistance for Ukraine on Sunday during a visit to Kyiv, as Russia continued a series of attacks against the Ukrainian capital and critical infrastructure.
Germany announced more than €1.3 billion in new assistance, including approximately €1 billion in military support and €350 million aimed at strengthening Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
The military package is expected to support long-range weapons, combat drones and satellite capabilities. Germany also plans to finance Ukrainian drone production as Kyiv seeks new ways to counter Russia's increasing use of jet-powered attack drones.
Merz met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the visit. The two governments also signed a series of agreements expanding cooperation in defense and weapons production.
The visit came amid continuing Russian attacks on Kyiv. The city's Northern Bridge was struck during the latest wave of attacks, following several days in which bridges and other infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital have been targeted.
The escalating attacks come at the same time that diplomatic efforts may be showing signs of renewed movement.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is prepared to participate in U.S.-backed trilateral talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States. The United Arab Emirates is among the possible locations under discussion for talks later this month.
No agreement to end the war has been reached, and fighting continues despite the possibility of renewed negotiations.
Germany has emerged as one of Ukraine's largest supporters during the war, and Merz said during Sunday's visit that his government would continue supporting Kyiv despite Russian pressure.
The combination of intensified attacks, additional European military support and renewed discussion of negotiations places Ukraine at the center of several major international developments as the conflict moves toward another winter.
